The aim of the Course is to bring together people with different scientific backgrounds to learn and discuss an advanced subject in Mathematical Physics. The Course consists of 12 lectures of approximately 1 hour each; the style of the meeting is very informal.
Contents of the course
We will run through the concepts that are central to the derivation of the equations of Continuum Mechanics: kinematics, analysis of deformation and motion, measures of strain, balance laws, measures of stress, etc. We will specialize them to hyperelasticity, and derive stress-strain relationships for incompressible, isotropic soft solids. This theory is at the heart of modelling of very soft matter such as rubber, gels, tissues, etc. Finally, we will see how some mechanical tests such as simple tension or simple shear give access to the material parameters characterizing soft solids such as rubber or brain matter.
